Shockwave Therapy

What is Shockwave Therapy Treatment ?

Shockwave Therapy is a non-surgical treatment used to treat chronic painful conditions of the musculoskeletal system. A shockwave is an intense but short wave of energy travelling faster than the speed of sound which is passed through the skin at the injured area and works by stimulating local blood flow, cell regeneration and healing within the body, whilst decreasing local factors which can cause pain.

What conditions does Shockwave Therapy help with?

Shockwave Therapy treatment is a highly effective treatment and is most beneficial for patients suffering with conditions such as:

Ø  Planter Fasciitis

Ø  Shoulder Pain

Ø  Tennis Elbow/Golfers Elbow

Ø  Achilles Tendinopathy

Ø  Trochanteric Bursitis

Ø  Calcific Tendinopathy

Ø  Myofascial Pain

What are the therapeutic effects of Shockwave Therapy?

Ø  Pain Reduction

Ø  Increase in blood flow thereby promoting tissue healing and regeneration

Ø  Initiation of a proinflammatory response which kickstarts the body’s natural healing process

Is Shockwave Therapy right for me?

Before Shockwave Therapy is considered you will need to have an Osteopathy initial consultation, whereby your practitioner will be able to advise you if Shockwave Therapy will be suitable for you.

How is Shockwave Therapy administered?

Your practitioner will place ultrasound gel to the effected area and the Shockwave probe will be pressed into the gel. Shockwaves are then delivered through the skin. The shockwave spreads inside the injured tissue that is being treated, prompting the body to respond naturally by kick starting the healing process.

How does it feel?

The shockwaves are felt as a pulse type sensation and this can feel a little uncomfortable but not painful. All treatments at SJD are performed within the patients pain tolerance levels as everyone is different and your practitioner will constantly be checking in with you that your discomfort does not exceed an 5/10 during your shockwave therapy treatment.

How many sessions will I need?

The recommendation is that 3-6 sessions of Shockwave Therapy are performed at weekly intervals for optimal results.
